So many thoughts from the commentators here. I’ll throw my insights in and hope they help.
Funerals are for the living to honor or remember the deceased. They are the tangible, outward expression of the impact the deceased had on their loved ones, family and friends. A funeral should be conducted to include the beliefs (or lack thereof), memories, and desire of the deceased and their families.
Athesist funerals, in my experience, aren’t that much different than a religious one. The ones I’ve seen included someone acting a facilitator and songs, stories, videos, photos and memorabilia that tell the story of the deceased.
Some families opt to cremate and then have a party somewhere else. Some choose to bury the deceased at a simple graveside service and then call it good.
The overarching theme here in all of these services is coming together and taking care of the deceased.
