Who is currently your all-time favourite guitarist, and why? Email back and let me know! Let's get this conversation rolling. I'm talking all-time here (you can choose guitarists that are no longer living!) My answer changes every day, depending on what mood I am in. But for today, I gotta go with our main man Eric Clapton. Here's why! I didn't truly study Clapton until I had been playing guitar for over a decade. Growing up, I had learned the riff from Sunshine of your Love, and I nailed Tears in Heaven when I was getting into fingerstyle. That was about it! I never studied his lead playing and solos until I started teaching guitar. Lots of people request to learn Clapton songs, so over the years, I have learned lots of note for note Clapton. The first few Clapton solos I learned were a trip. Everything looked familiar as if I had already learned them. This totally blew my mind and I came to this realization: Clapton is such an incredibly influential guitarist that after 15 years of practicing guitar, I had learned his style of playing by studying guitarists that had studied him. Every great guitarist in the past 50 years has either studied Clapton or studied someone that studied Clapton. It's your time. Enjoy this lesson on the classic cream tune Sunshine of your Love.
