HUTTON SERIES

Dear Johan,

We are pleased to extend an invitation for you to join the inaugural event of The Hutton Series on Climate Change at 14:00 (BST) on Tuesday 6 October 2020.

Taking place across 2020-21 at Adam Smith’s Panmure House in Edinburgh, this series by Heriot-Watt University brings together a diverse cross-section of experts, business leaders, scientists, and concerned citizens in the service of one simple aim: to identify ten key priorities, innovations & actions to mitigate climate change.

The keynote speakers for this opening session are the environmental and polar scientist Professor Sir Ian Boyd, former chief scientist at DEFRA & member of SAGE, and the CEO of Natwest Group, Alison Rose. You will be invited to participate in the wider debate virtually.

Panmure House is the final remaining home of Adam Smith, and during his twelve-year tenancy he regularly hosted key luminaries of the Scottish Enlightenment, who would gather at the House to debate the most pressing issues of their time. Among these luminaries was Smith’s great friend James Hutton – the father of modern geology, whose radical new thinking forever changed our understanding of the earth. The ground-breaking discussions held at Panmure House then, at the brink of the first industrial revolution, are now once again required as we grapple with a global energy use transition.

This first Hutton Series event will be facilitated online. If you would like to join the online session please secure your place by completing the online sign up form.

We very much look forward to welcoming you Adam Smith’s former home, albeit it virtually, to help shape the future of our global approach to climate change.

With all best wishes,

Kind regards,

The Watt Club
